Strongsville, OH (April 8, 2016)
- During last evening’s Strongsville Board of Education work session, its five Board members unanimously approved the construction projects to replace the natural grass field at Pat Catan Stadium with synthetic turf and to install synthetic turf at the new Strongsville Middle School. Both projects are being funded through the “Excellence in Athletics” fundraising campaign, which has received corporate and individual donations totaling over $1 million.
With a lead donation totaling over $400,000, Serpentini Chevrolet will be the title sponsor for the field at Pat Catan Stadium. Southwest General pledged more than $280,000, as well as a $100,000 donation from the Pat Catan Family. These organizations join a list of other contributors including Shoreline Trucking, GPD Group, Hammond Construction, Strongsville’s Athletic Booster Club, Strongsville’s Music Booster Club, Strongsville Lacrosse, Strongsville administration and Board members, and Strongsville PTA.
Strongsville City Schools administration began investigating the feasibility of this project in August of 2015. “The synthetic turf fields at both the high school and new middle school will continue to help us enhance the district’s athletic program. The fields will also provide us the ability and flexibility to host numerous events and activities, while maintaining the integrity of the playing surface, which has not been the case at our stadium,” said Andy Jalwan, Strongsville High School Athletic Director.
“We have been so appreciative of the community support for this project. Several local businesses and individuals have stepped up with significant financial contributions. Our district, and most importantly our students, will benefit for years to come because of their generosity,” said Cameron Ryba, Strongsville City Schools Superintendent.
“As members of the Board, we are always mindful of our District goals - fostering student achievement and growth, while maintaining financial prudence. These turf projects align with these goals. Our athletic programs will be enhanced through this project, and there will be benefits for our music program, as well. A better, safer surface for all who use the field, including athletes and band members, is a very positive end result,” said Carl Naso, Board of Education President.
The natural grass at Pat Catan Stadium will begin to be replaced immediately following the end of the school year. The new synthetic turf playing surface will be installed and ready for activity by the beginning of the Mustangs football season in mid-August. Strongsville Middle School’s field will be installed and completed in September of 2017.
The mission of the Strongsville City Schools, an excellent school district with a tradition of nationally recognized students and staff, is to ensure all students reach their fullest potential, through challenging curriculum and activities, provided by a highly qualified, motivated staff, in a safe, supportive environment with up-to-date facilities and technology - in partnership with the community.
